2008 ELITE MANITOBA, MARCH 15 & 16, 2008 - Commentary from ED: I have stopped by the gym today during the set up of the competition venue and I must say I was impressed. I was impressed by the exceptional efforts of all volunteers. In an hour and half, handful of volunteers transformed Gold Gymnasium, beaten up by decades of abuse and neglect, into a “rhythmic gymnastics venue”. One crew of volunteers mastered the challenge of creating a hospitality room for judges in a classroom without water and fridge. Other crew set up the canteen in the main gym dealing with the same challenges of no water and yet managed to produce very creative menu. Special mention must go to the volunteers setting up the carpet! “Dan and your crew were fantastic!” It was amazing to watch Dan single-handedly lifting the carpet rolls on and off the dolly. With in an hour both the practice and the competition carpets were laid out, taped and vacuum cleaned to perfection. Finishing touches put on by the ladies skirting the tables and hanging the signs completed the transformation. Behind the judges tables, Lydia prepared scoring system and in the process managed to train two new scorers. Once the competition started I had to leave. By then the gym was truly transformed and the meet director Sandie stepped into another shoes, this time announcers shoes, and opened the competition exactly at 2:00 PM. First gymnast was called on to the floor and first music sounded off. I bet no one noticed the hoops Noel had to jump through between playing the athlete’s music and the announcer using the microphone. Noel used all his technological vises to make the ancient but complicated sound system work. Just another day of staging rhythmic gymnastics competition. And then the spotlight was on gymnasts, coaches and judges.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!!

PARENTS - Parents play an important role in their child’s life, including sports. A parent’s responsibility is to encourage and support their child to ensure their experiences with sport are positive. Parent’s can often be heard yelling at their child or child’s coach from the stands, which has prompted some coaches to go as far as creating a code of conduct not only for their athletes but also for parents. It is easy to get wrapped up in the game but the most important thing is that your child has fun with sport and physical activity. (SIRC November 2007 Newsletter.)

gymnasts make friendsBRIDGING THE GAP - Winnipeg, Thursday, November 8th, 2007 - Provincial Team athletes Emily Richard, Tamsin Lourens, Administrative Assistant Tanya Manastersky and Executive Director Zlatica Stauder joined the Special Olympics rhythmic gymnastics athletes and coaches to promote the sport of rhythmic gymnastics amongst the students with and without an intellectual disability. The third annual Passport to Sport event, held at the MTS Centre, was attended by hundreds of school children. Six rhythmic gymnasts performed in front of the appreciative audience. Ron Black, the celebrity MC, added a special touch to the event remembering rhythmic gymnastics “glory” from years before. After the performance the gymnasts moved to the concourse where they took on a role of coaches and introduced dozens of students to our sport. It was mutually inspiring event for all of us.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES, Shanghai, China - by Cindy Hoover

IMG_0126I attended the Special Olympics World Summer Games earlier this month in Shanghai. The gymnastics competitions were in the International Gymnastics Center. A modem facility devoted to gymnastics and right next door to our hotel. As usual the Artistic and Rhythmic events were coordinated at the same venue and all the International officials stayed at the same hotel. It was really nice to catch up with old friends and meet a few new ones. Read more.....

Congratulation to the athletes as well as our judges Cindy and Pat!
