Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)

Gymnastics is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Foundation Sport. Gymnastics participation is crucial to the development of fundamental movement patterns and fundamental sport skills that contribute to physical literacy. All children should have the opportunity to participate in gymnastics.

What does this mean for gymnastics in Canada?

The LTAD framework was endorsed and adopted by all Provincial/Territorial organizations of Gymnastics Canada in 2007. The GCG LTAD is a framework for the optimal development of gymnasts of all ages, interests and abilities in all disciplines of gymnastics. It provides a structure for national/provincial program design, for club program design, and for coach education. It ensures that all gymnastic participants to reach their potential whether that is competing at the Olympic Games or participating in World Gymnaestrada. The GCG LTAD document reinforces Gymnastics Canada’s vision, mission, and goals. It is belived that once fully implemented, the LTAD framework should allow GCG to fully realize its goals for high performance achievement and gymnastics for life.
